2023 - Semester 1 End Grades

Please note that:

(1) It is suggested, not required to have a Canvas assignment for S1 Final Exam, as it will be easier for students/families to see the grade.

(2) We are working on a method to completely transfer grades from Canvas to Aspen that will include Mid-Term/Final Exam grade, PBGR1/PBGR2 grades, and End of Quarter grade. We are pushing to have something in place for the end of Semester 2.

For now, we still need your help entering the S1 Final Exam grade in Aspen, which will be due by midnight on Tuesday, February 7th.

Please follow the processes below for Canvas and Aspen. Directions below for Aspen also include how to Post Grades, if you need a refresher.

Canvas

  • Create an Assignment Group with the name S1 Final Exam (it should have 0% weighting)
  • Create an Assignment named: S1 Final Exam
    • (optional) Add any information about the exam in the text box
    • Points: 100
    • Display Grade as: Points
    • [Enable this check] - Do not count this assignment towards the final grade
    • Submission Type: On Paper
      • this creates a gradebook column without a student submission
    • Due Date: Jan 27 11:59pm

The assignment should look similar to this:

PBGR

If you require a PBGR entry, please follow these directions to create an assignment in Canvas.

  • Create an Assignment Group with the name PBGR (it should have 0% weighting)
  • Create an Assignment named: PBGR1
    • Enter appropriate information in the text box, if necessary
    • Points: 1
      • In this case a 0 is NPR (Not Proficient) and a 1 is PR (Proficient)
      • This also allows for easy, numerical entry in the gradebook
    • Display Grade as: Points
    • [enable this check] - Do not count this assignment towards the final grade
    • Submission Type: On Paper
      • this allows a gradebook column to be created without needing the student to submit
    • Due Date: Jan 27 11:59pm

Aspen

First, log in to Aspen and navigate to your course, then to the gradebook (aka “Scores” at the bottom left in the navigation).

To enter the S1 Exam grade in Aspen, change the Grade Columns to Post Columns - Term. You should now see columns for S1 Final Exam and PBGR1. Enter the S1 Final Exam grade and if applicable, the PBGR value of PR or NPR, Proficient and Not Proficient respectively.

Remember that Incomplete's (I) and Medicals (MED) must be approved by School Counseling and/or Administration.

When all grade entries are complete, click the Update Post Columns button, selecting the appropriate Grade Term from the drop-down menu and click Next.

On the following screen titled “Choose Update Values”, select Average:Canvas Q2 from the drop-down menu and click Next. (These actions now move grades from the assignment grade into the Post Column.)

To calculate the Final grade for the semester click the Update button (in red below) in the Final Grade column.

Now click the Post Grades button and you'll see a pop-up window with your class name.
Ensure the correct Grade Term is selected and that Grades to post option is set to “Term grades for all students” and click OK.
